Week of Feb. 26-March 2

Post your final week's report here. Thanks for being a great news discussion group. It was the bright spot of my week. It's funny how talking about the news leads to thoughts on life, isn't it? Take care. Louise

2/26/08, A1: Ford is Pushing Buyout Offers to Its Workers. Many offers have been given to Ford Employees as incentives to take buyouts from the company. Ford is trying to persuade some of their middle-class employees a chance to leave the company with some bonuses. Since Ford had lost money in December, the company hopes to push out some of their longer-termed employees and hire cheaper starting wage employees. From the sounds of it, a lot of workers were skeptical about taking on new beginnings; however, some also sounded thrilled at the opportunities they may have if they take Ford’s incentives.

2/26/08, C1: Every Move You Make. Because the Neilson Company is well known and trustable, some television viewers agree to be a part of “Neilson Household,” as their daily television habits are closely monitored. Neilson now wants to “invade” more consumers, but in terms of watching their internet habits and monitoring their cell phone usage. I think closely monitoring of these things are more personal than television and I don’t feel that many households will be up for this right away. Maybe if Nielson comes up with a clever way of telling households that they want to snoop on them, more people might actually open their doors.

2/26/08, C4: The Academy Awards this year drew a small audience. The commercials that are played during the Academy Awards are usually pretty good, but this year they were said to be nothing special. I did not watch the Academy Awards, but the commercials that appeared during it were somewhat assessed.

2/26/08, D1: The Encyclopedia of Life, No Bookshelf Required. Now this article was interesting! I never imagined someone would try to compile a list of all species or living things! I guess the website will go up on Thursday, so I’ll need to check that out. If someone did write a single-volume that included all species known to science, it’d take up 300 feet for one book. There have been previous attempts at creating something similar, yet, they all have failed. Good luck them!!

2/27/08, A1: $4 for a gallon of gas…I sure hope not. Gas prices keep rising and this may affect the economy. A $.19 raise in just two weeks is a lot. I’m afraid for the prices to come this summer!

2/27/08, C1: Starbucks closed their doors to have a training session for their employees. It was said that it’s best to have all of them there at the same time to make sure everyone was on the same page. They are still ridding of their breakfast sandwiches. All I can say is, I hope that strong smell of coffee comes back or there may be trouble for Starbucks.

2/27/08, C1: Delta Airlines and Northwest Airlines are discussing a merger. The main problem would be in deciding the new seniority lists. Within Delta, they hold a younger group while Northwest has an older age range group.

Sorry my report is so late….
In the New York Times

“A Fluid Religious Life is Seen in US, With Switches Common”, A1
Looks like more adult Americans are switching to different religions other than Christianity or to no religion at all. I think a lot of this had to do with all the recent molestation cases being filed against the Catholic Church, since it “has experienced the greatest net losses as a result of affiliation changes.”
The unaffiliated religious group has become the fourth largest group in America. Protestant religions are still number one with Baptists having the majority.

“Flooded Village Files Suit, Citing Corporate Link to Climate Change”, A16
I am so excited that Kivalina, a city in Alaska is trying to sue big corporations for causing greenhouse emissions and causing global warming which caused flooding in the city of Kivalina. The flooding is causing many to evacuate and relocate. I am going to follow this story to see what happens.

“I’m Not Running for President, But…”, A27
I really loved this op-ed piece. A lot of the points he makes are excellent. People want a president that will guarantee change. Especially change in our schools, fixing the American economy, and health plans. None of the candidates have really debated over any of these issues in depth and if any of them did decide to tackle the task, they would probably win the vote of a majority of Americans.

“A Blood Thinner Might Be Linked To More Deaths”, A1
I feel really bad because it seems like I’m totally ripping on the Chinese, but here is yet another defected medication story linked to manufacturing in China. The FDA is still trying to determine the cause of death related incidents that had jumped up to 21 from 4. The FDA also admitted to violating its own regulations by not inspecting the factory before it started shipping raw ingredients for the blood thinner. When the factory was inspected last week, it was found to not identify malfunctioning equipment or defective material……Scary….I hope I never need any drugs that get manufactured in China.

“China to Reconsider One-Child Limit, an Official Suggests”, A4
China may increase the limit on children because so many Chinese girls go missing every year…probably more likely killed.

Monday, 3/3/08
“Deal Close on Wiretap Law, Top Democrat Tells CNN”, A13
An expired eavesdropping law may be concluded to give phone companies retroactive protection. This means that they are looking for exemptions to the law for past offenses. That’s just wrong. I hate how President Bush has squashed a lot of our basic rights, like protection from illegal search and seizure, and now eavesdropping. The next president really has his job cut out for him to undo all the bad things Bush has instilled.

“In an Answerless Canadian Inquiry, 3 Bodyless Feet”, A4
This one’s weird. On Gabriola Island, British Columbia, 3 feet have surfaced in the Strait of Georgia in the last 6 months. All of the feet have been right feet, and oceanographers have said that the left feet have a different shape and could have gone with a different current and could end up somewhere totally different. Locals speculate that the left feet are encased in cement in the bottom of the Strait. No bodies have been found to go with the feet.

When it rained five days and the skies turned dark as night
When it rained five days and the skies turned dark as night
There was trouble takin' place in the lowland at night
I woke up this mornin', couldn't even get out of my door
I woke up this mornin', couldn't even get out of my door
Enough trouble to make a poor woman wonder where she's gonna go
They rowed a little boat just about five miles across the farm
Said they rowed a little boat just about five miles across the farm
I packed up all of my clothes, throwed them in, and they rowed me along
Where it thundered and lightnin'd, and the wind began to blow
Said it thundered and lightnin'd, and the wind began to blow
There was thousands of people,
They had no place to go
I went out and stood up on a high old lonesome hill
I went out and stood up on a high old lonesome hill
I looked down on the house where I used to live.
Back Water Blues that calls me to pack my things and go
Back Water Blues that calls me to pack my things and go
Cause my house fell down, and I can't live there no more
Ooh, I can't live there no more
Ooh, I can't live there no more
There ain't no place for a poor woman to go -Bessie Smith

How many roads must a man walk down
Before you call him a man?
Yes, 'n' how many seas must a white dove sail
Before she sleeps in the sand?
Yes, 'n' how many times must the cannon balls fly
Before they're forever banned?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

How many times must a man look up
Before he can see the sky?
Yes, 'n' how many ears must one man have
Before he can hear people cry?
Yes, 'n' how many deaths will it take till he knows
That too many people have died?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

How many years can a mountain exist
Before it's washed to the sea?
Yes, 'n' how many years can some people exist
Before they're allowed to be free?
Yes, 'n' how many times can a man turn his head,
Pretending he just doesn't see?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind.
